TOKYO Steven Nelson Chiefs Jersey , Nov. 8 (Xinhua) -- A group of about 100 people led by architect Fumihiko Maki voiced in a petition against the Japanese
government's current plan on the New National Stadium for the 2020 Tokyo
Olympics, according to local media Friday.

They said the current design of the stadium potentially spoiled the landscape in Tokyo's Meiji Jingu Gaien area, a major urban green space in the country,
said Japan's Kyodo News.

In the petition presented Thursday to the sports ministry and Tokyo metropolitan government, the group said "given a total floor space double to
triple the past main Olympics venues such as London and Athens, we are also
concerned about its costs for safety, maintenance and management," Kyodo quoted
the petition as saying.

The group called on the authorities to modify the scale of the stadium to a combination of around 50,000 permanent seats and temporary seats from current
80,000-permanent-seat plan.

They also said that the new stadium should be one that would be appropriate for an aging society experiencing a declining population and urged the
government to fully explain about the project to the nation, said the report.

The renovation plan designed by a British-Iraqi architect aims to make the existing national stadium an all-weather facility with a retractable roof.

According to the plan, the national stadium will be built on a 113,000 square meter site, about 1.6 times larger than the current site, and will have a total
floor space of 290,000 square meters, about 5.6 times larger than the existing
stadium.

LONDON, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- Six novelists have been shortlisted for the 2017 Man Booker Prize, a literary prize awarded for the best original novel in
English, it was announced Wednesday.

The shortlist, which features three women and three men, covers a wide range of subjects, from the struggle of a family trying to retain its self-sufficiency
in rural England to a love story between two refugees seeking to flee an unnamed
city in the throes of civil war.

Two debut novelists, including the 29-year-old British writer Fiona Mozley and the American young female author Emily Fridlund, are among the six up for
the prestigious literary prize with 50,000 pounds award this year.

Mozley works part-time at a bookshop in York and wrote Elmet while commuting between London and York, according to BBC.

Emily Fridlund's novel History of Wolves tells the story from the perspective of a 14-year-old girl living on a commune in the U.S. midwest, as the judges
comment it "a novel of silver prose and disquieting power that asks very
difficult questions."

The other four shortlisted are veteran American writer Paul Auster, U.S. novelist George Saunders, Britain's Ali Smith and Pakistan-born Mohsin Hamid.

The judges remarked that the novels, each in its own way, challenge and subtly shift our preconceptions - about the nature of love, about the experience
of time, about questions of identity and even death.

The winning book will be announced on Oct. 17.

LHASA, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- With the backdrop of the Himalayas and the Yarlung Zangbo River at its front, the Hilton Nyingchi Resort in the city of Nyingchi in
Tibet has added a modern touch to the region.

The Hilton is the first international brand resort in Nyingchi and the Hilton Group's first hotel in Tibet.

The hotel opened in late March this year, taking about three months to prepare for the opening, a record short time for the Hilton Group, according to
Larry Gao, general manager of the Hilton Nyingchi Resort.

"We wanted to open it ahead of the annual peach blossom season, which attracts about 600,000 tourists this year," Gao said.

More and more visitors come to the hotel as Chinese travelers are increasingly affluent, and over 14,000 people have stayed in the hotel since it
opened, an impressive performance for a new hotel, Gao said.

In addition to high-end hotels, local people are also benefiting from Tibet's tourism boom.

Sangshi has earned about 120,000 yuan each year since she opened a guesthouse near Basum Lake in 2013. She used to make just 30,000 yuan a year through her
tea shop.

Her village is currently home to 31 guesthouses, raking in a total of over 3 million yuan in accommodation last year.

Basum Lake will soon be rated as a five-A tourist spot, the highest official rating for tourism, becoming the first ecological spot in Tibet to earn the
qualification.

Tibet is promoting tourism, which has become a major driver of the region's growth. It currently contributes to over 30 percent to the region's total GDP.

"Tourism produces pollution-free GDP and is a pillar sector in line with our green development path," said Zhang Gengyun, vice mayor of Nyingchi.

Visitors to Tibet grew from 10 million people in 2012 to over 23 million in 2016, growing 21.6 percent year on year. Tourism revenues grew by 27.2 percent
each year, exceeding 33 billion yuan in 2016.

"Transport is the major factor checking tourism growth in Tibet. The Nyingchi Mainling Airport is one of the busiest airports in China and it's not easy to
book tickets," Zhang said.

The rapid growth of travelers to Tibet is bolstered by convenient transport conditions. The total length of highways in Tibet grew from 65,198 kilometers in
2012 to over 82,000 kilometers today. High-grade highways saw their mileage
increase six-fold from 2012 to 2016.
