Activated charcoal is an ingredient that you may have seen in various “detox” drinks, but if you’re wondering what exactly it is and how exactly it helps — you’re not alone. While not a common ingredient, it’s been touted as a miracle supplement that can help everything from high cholesterol to hangovers. But does it actually do any of that?coal active carbon

Charcoal is typically made from coal or wood or other natural sources (and when you’re ingesting it, it should come from an edible source like coconut shells), but it becomes “activated” when it’s heated at a high temperature and combined with gas or another activating agent. Activated charcoal is routinely used in hospitals and emergency rooms to help with acute poisonings or overdoses, because it binds and flushes toxins via adsorption, a process in which the toxins get stuck to the charcoal and leave the body when it does.

When taken in very small doses, however, activated charcoal has been shown to be quite helpful in alleviating a variety of issues, including gas and bloating.

There are a few health enthusiasts out there who claim that activated charcoal may also help with hangovers by helping to rid the body of the artificial sugars and chemicals from mixers, but that has not been proven.

Because of its adsorption abilities, activated charcoal has become a favorite among detox lovers, but the very reason people love it also means it should be used in moderation. If used too often, it can flush out the nutrients and minerals your body actually needs.

Other uses of activated charcoal include water purification and teeth whitening.

The bottom line is that if you’ve been feeling a bit sluggish or that your digestion is a little off, using a small amount of natural activated charcoal might be a great alternative to over the counter medications. Just make sure you’re using the recommended amount.

And remember, if anyone ever tries to sell you a miracle “detox” drink, with or without activated charcoal, smile and nod, and then walk away! Detoxing is a complicated process that doesn’t happen after one $8 drink. Instead, it happens over a period of time on a diet full of fruit and vegetables.coal based activated carbon suppliers
