The prize was the first Lotto Texas jackpot win of the year. The Quick Pick ticket matched all six numbers in the January 15 draw: 16,
34, 38, 40, 49 and 54. The ticket was sold by Stripes Store 40922H, at
5301 McPherson Road in Laredo.
The player chose the cash lump sum option when they bought the ticket, so they will collect a payout of $13,349,448.78 before taxes.
The tax withholding rate in Texas is 24 percent, less the wager amount,
for US citizens or residents.Texas is one of just a few states that lets
winners stay anonymous, although a trend towards greater privacy has
seen more states pass anonymity laws recently.
The jackpot had been rolling since it was last won on September 25, 2019, when a lucky player from Baytown hit the $23.75 million top prize
with a ticket purchased in Montgomery. The winner, who chose to keep
their identity private, opted for a cash lump sum of $18,067,668.07.
Lotto Texas draws take place every Wednesday and Saturday night at 10:12 pm CT. Ticket sales are closed between 10:02 pm and 10:15 pm.
During the draw, six numbers from 1-54 are randomly chosen. Jackpots
start at a minimum $5 million and roll over until someone wins. For an
additional $1 per play, players can add the Extra! feature for the
chance to win up to $10,000 more on all prizes except the jackpot.
The biggest Lotto Texas jackpot ever was $145 million, won on June 19, 2004. The lucky ticket was sold in El Paso and Alfredo Ornelas
Barragan, on behalf of VOM Enterprises Ltd., claimed the cash lump sum
of $61.9 million after withholdings.
Texas players had a successful January - a Plano resident won a $2 million Powerball prize and an El Paso player hit $1 million on
Powerball. Tickets in Edinburg, Houston and Pearsall each rounded up $1
million on scratch games. All the winners stayed anonymous.
In fact, data from the Texas Lottery shows that historically, January is the month when the largest number of prizes of $5,000 and above have
been claimed. January 14 is the date Texans have claimed the most
prizes over the years - 67. Over 55 percent of all prizes were claimed
during the first six months of the year. At the other end of the
spectrum, November has 40 percent fewer claims than January.
