Former UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre vacated his title in December, a month after a controversial split decision victory over Johny

I dont regret anything," said St-Pierre to TSN.ca. "Im very happy with the
decision I made." The time away from the cage has allowed the Saint-Isidore,
Quebec native to focus on other interests. During the Sochi 2014 Olympics,
St-Pierre put his money where his mouth is regarding the Canadian mens hockey
team. He made a jersey bet with one of his friends during the Canada vs. USA
semifinal game and one with UFC light-heavyweight number one contender Alexander
Gustafsson, a native of Arboga, Sweden, over the gold medal game. St-Pierres
belief in the Canadian national hockey team never wavered and was rewarded. "I
was confident enough to make the bet," said St-Pierre. "I was happy that I won."
As for representing Canada on an international stage, St-Pierre sees himself a
little different than those athletes that wore the maple leaf during the
Olympics. "My sport is not a team sport, I dont represent a county and I have
fans around the world," said St-Pierre. "I try to present a good image for
anyone that looks up to me wherever they are from. Im doing it for myself and my
fans." At UFC 171 Hendricks, who narrowly lost to St-Pierre in what was also his
last bout, will take on Robbie Lawler for the vacated welterweight title. The
former champ will be a very interested observer. "Im going to watch the fight
because its a fight I want to see and its going to be a good fight." As for
picking a favourite, GSP gives a slight edge to the last man he faced before
turning over the title. "Striking wise they both have the capacity to knock each
other out. Ill give the edge to Hendricks because he has an edge in the
wrestling and grappling."

said he expects Newton to be ready for the Bucs. "For sure. I do," Rivera said.
"Im optimistic, but I believe in him. Im watching him progress and get better."
Rivera said its all about getting the soreness to subside. Newton, who said he
feels great, was well enough to travel with the team to Pittsburgh on Wednesday
afternoon but will not play against the Steelers Thursday night in the preseason
finale. In the meantime, he will receive treatment while the equipment staff
works to alter his flak jacket so it better protects the ribs moving forward.
Rivera called Newtons injury a bit of fluke, saying that he got hit in the one
crease in his protection where the ribs werent completely protected. When asked
if it was just one rib he injured, Newton replied, "Ribs, not rib." The Panthers
will reevaluate Newton this weekend. They have a light walkthrough on Saturday,
but essentially they wont practtice again in pads until Monday.

Wednesdays practice, Newton donned a pair of shoulder pads, but took them off a
few minutes later. "I wanted to do something I have done at least one time a
week — and thats put my pads on," Newton said. "Its a superstition thing." Its
unclear if Newton will change his style of play following the injury. He was
hurt when he went headfirst — instead of sliding — and got stepped on. "I am who
I am and things do happen," said Newton, who has run for 2,032 yards and 28
touchdowns in three seasons. "One thing playing this game, you will get hurt
sooner or later. ... You know something is going to happen. Its a physical sport
and needs to be played that way." When asked if he considering sliding more,
Newton said, "I guess we will all just have to stay tuned and see." Rivera said
hes not going to chide Newton for his instinctual decisions on the field.
"Should he slide? Yeah, I would like to see him slide," Rivera said. "But at the
same time I want him to play the way he plays best. ... I just tell him to be
careful and be smart. I dont want to take away who he is as a football player."
Rivera said Newtons injury will not affect how the Panthers game plan for the
Buccaneers. He said theyll continue to use the read option, which involves
Newton potentially running the football. "We are going to do what we do," Rivera
said.
