Saturday's fashion show gave 4-H’ers a chance to strut their stuff and show off their creations at the Platte County Fair.
Amber Spawn, 11, decided to move up from pillow cases and other small projects to make her first piece of clothing this year, a blue dress with a
drawstring neckline and lace hem.
“(I needed) grandma’s help with a lot of it,” she said.
The challenging first project paid off with two grand champion medals, but more importantly, Spawn learned she loves making clothing.
“I think it’s relaxing,” she said. “I can have it just how I want it.”
On rainy days, 18-year-old Leah Lindhorst will probably be sporting her homemade rain jacket.
“I made it gray so I could wear it with anything,” she said.
Lindhorst has been making clothes for 10 years.
“I enjoy the outcome,” she said. “And how you can get sizes from the back of a pattern and it fits to your body.”
The rain jacket brought some challenges because of the materials.
“Trying to find a lining that wouldn’t be see-through and trying to get wrinkles out without melting the plastic,” Lindhorst said while discussing the
project.
Fifteen-year-old Kiersten Preister’s showed off her lilac dress with a white lace overlay designed for special occasions.
Even though she’s been making clothes for seven years, the layers made from very different fabrics presented a challenge.
“It was really challenging fabric,” she said. “But I like to challenge myself every year.”
Alicia Weeder’s mint green summer dress with a gold arrow motif took a week to make.
“But I worked on it all day every day,” she said.
She had to learn how to sew in a zipper and button hole, and doesn’t plan on stopping there.
“I’ll probably try something harder,” she said. “It depends on what’s in style next year.”
