Cartoon crazy: Milan Fashion Week wants you to scribble all over your clothes
There’s something playful and nostalgic about mixing pop culture icons like Bugs Bunny and Snow White with the sensible, sophisticated silhouettes we’ve
seen on the runways at Milan Fashion Week this season.
Whilst designers have been referencing and collaborating with illustrators and cartoonists for decades now, you can count on the likes of Alessandro
Michele and Miuccia Prada to feed us fresh new ways of interpreting this trend
into wearable, high-fashion creations.
At Gucci, Alessandro Michele’s signature blend of ‘kitschy-chic’ was back on display, this time with bedazzled Bugs Bunny grandpa vests and Snow White
sweaters; another classic example of Michele raiding your grandparents’ closet
and reinterpreting it for a younger, fashion-forward generation.Over at Prada,
Miuccia continued to build on a motif she previously explored in Prada’s
spring/summer ’18 menswear collection back in June. For her womenswear
collection however, the designer drew upon the work of several female comic book
artists in order to make a powerful feminist statement. While most of the
artists referenced in the collection were contemporary names, June Tarpé Mills,
one of the first major female comic book artists, was another strong reference
point which only helped to enhance Miuccia’s overall message. An additional take
on this week’s trending motif was seen at Moschino. Accessorised with black
leather biker jackets and fishnet stockings, Jeremy Scott sent Kaia Gerber and
Bella Hadid down the runway in pastel crop tops emblazoned with characters from
the My Little Pony franchise. The wild juxtaposition of tough girl attitude
mixed with the sweet, doe-eyed figurines in Scott’s spring/summer ’18 collection
was unmistakeable.Perhaps only the bravest in fashion will invest in one of the
Moschino crop tops or a Gucci vest, but Prada’s subtle take on the trend will
surely satisfy anyone looking to inject a sense of playfulness into their closet
this season.
