KARACHI, May 7 (Online): At least twelve persons were killed and more than sixty-five injured in a suspected suicide bomb blast in a mosque at Bolton market adjacent to Sindh Madrasa ul Islam at Faisal Avenue Karachi.
According to initial reports a powerful bomb exploded at 1:20 p.m. in a mosque adjacent to Sindh Madrasa ul Islam at a time when Friday prayers were about to be held. A large number of Namazees were present in the mosque to offer Jumma prayers.
Soon after the incident, a large number of police personal reached on the spot while police and other volunteers shifted the injured to city’s hospitals. A large number of ambulances also rushed to the spot for relief activities.
Sources described the bomb blast as a suicide attack, however, official sources so far has not confirmed it.
Some of those killed have been identified as Hafeez Ali, Altaf Hussain, Zafar Abbas, Khawaja Kameel, Nisar and two unidentified men. The injured have been admitted in civil hospital where twenty of them are reported to be in critical condition. Six other injured have been shifted to Jinnah hospital and two among them are in critical condition. The death toll is feared to rise.
Meanwhile violent Namazees raised slogans against the law enforcement agencies on their failure and hurled stones nearby buildings including houses and hotels damaging the window glasses.
On the other hand, Sindh Home Secretary Aftab Sheikh talking to a private TV network termed the incident as a conspiracy to sabotage bye-elections.
He said it would be premature to describe it as a suicide attack. He, however, said the culprits involved in this heinous crime would be arrested and punished under the law.
Earlier police officials and bomb disposal experts besieged the area and investigations are underway in this regard. Meanwhile, Governor Sindh Ishrat ul Ibad in his reaction described it is a regrettable and condemnable act.
Talking to a private TV channel he appealed to the people to help police in apprehending the culprits involved.
He expressed his sympathies with the affected families and announced Rs 100,000 as compensation for those who were killed and Rs 30 thousand each for injured. He also directed authorities concerned to provide free medical facilities to the injured
