Junoon's lead guitarist Salman Ahmed's documentary 'Rock Stars And The Mullahs' telecast by BBC has won the South Asian Journalists a**ociation Awards in the category of 'Outstanding story on South Asia-Broadcast'. Junoon has been invited to receive this award at a ceremony to be held at Columbia University in New York June 20.
Shehryar Ahmed, Salman's brother and Junoon's Manager said the main objective of making this 60-minute documentary was to improve the image about Pakistan in the minds of people in West. "Whatsoever is being projected by western media is not true because they only highlight the negative side of Pakistanis. Another aim was to show that 'war against terrorism' in our country is badly affecting the common man especially the youth.
Our young generation is aware about the issues and can move with the changing trends. It is high time the western media showed the other side of Pakistan to remove misconceptions among the people in West", he said.
He said "BBC wanted to do this story and Production Company 'Wide Angle' approached Salman who helped the team and made the documentary. He travelled with them to many cities of Pakistan such as Karachi, Islamabad, Lahore, Peshawar and many other cities of NWFP. In Pakistan Mullahs' views about music are negative and they consider it a vulgarity. Salman explored the conceptions about music.
The team not only visited religious schools but also various girls and boys colleges to gather first hand information about what the young people think in this regard", he said.
