Syed Noor’s 786 renamed Hum Aik Hain

* Meera asks government not to put her on ECL

Staff Report

LAHORE: Film director Syed Noor said on Friday that he had changed the name of his upcoming film 786 to Hum Aik Hain.

Addressing a press conference at the Lahore Press Club, Mr Noor said that his film was not based on sectarianism and extremism.

He said that baseless letters had been written to the censor board, alleging that his film was an effort to fuel sectarianism in the country. He said the film was based on President General Pervez Musharraf’s slogan of “war against terrorism”. The film has been produced in the interest of the country, he claimed. Mr Noor said the film was to be released yesterday (Friday) but now it would be released on Eidul Fitr “because of the propaganda about the film”.

The director said he wanted to expose the conspiracies of certain elements against Pakistan. “No Sunni or Shia can bomb a mosque. There are some elements conspiring against the nation and I have tried to expose them. My film isn’t based on sectarianism,” he said.

Referring to the letters to the censor board, he said: “These people do not let Pakistan’s film industry grow. This is why no serious filmmaker or director is taking interest in film production.” He said that Quranic verses and some dialogues had been removed from the film on directions of the censor board.

He said he had provided people with best possible recreation through his films, “but I feel sorry that I am being criticised for my sincere and good work for Pakistan”.

Meera asks govt not to put her on ECL: Film actress Meera said on Friday that she had requested the government not to put her name on the exit control list (ECL) because she hadn’t committed -any crime.

Talking to journalists from Bombay on the phone, Meera said that rumors that she had been put on the ECL were spreading in India and had affected her work.

She said that she had signed another film, Muskurahat, in India in which she would perform with Lucky Ali.
