Once Washington realized that the services of cornerback Orlando Scandrick weren’t needed

and forcing him to scramble to find other work. Washington decided instead to
let him start the process now of landing elsewhere, carrying a $1 million
signing bonus with him.
“[W]hen we initially signed Orlando we had just lost Kendall [Fuller], and it was before the draft,” coach Jay Gruden told reporters
on Tuesday. “We drafted [Greg] Stroman and obviously we got Adonis [Alexander],
and I think the emergence of Danny Johnson, Fabian Moreau at nickel. We wanted
to get these guys reps at nickel and [Quinton] Dunbar at corner and move on. So,
give Orlando ample time to get on a team before the season started.”
The approach carries risk. If one or more of the other corners are injured

million salary for 2018 if he’d suffered a serious injury before being
released.
As a vested veteran, Scandrick becomes a free agent as of 4:00 p.m. ET, free to sign with any other team at any other time.

Jimmy Howard stopped 31 shots for his first shutout of the season as the Red Wings beat the Ottawa Senators 2-0 on Saturday for their third straight win.

job, allowing me to see the puck.”
Mike Condon finished with 25 saves for the Senators, who were blanked for the ninth time this season.

Wolanin, Anthony Mantha fed a pass across to Larkin on a 2-on-1 break, and
Larkin flipped the puck in as Condon lunged desperately across his goal crease.
It was Larkin’s fifth goal in the last seven games. He scored nine times in the
first 72 games.
”That was a horrible play on my part,” Wolanin said. ”It cost us the first goal and eventually the game winner.”
Athanasiou increased the margin to 2-0 at 4:29 of the third. Using Evgeni Svechnikov as a screen, Athanasiou fired a high shot past Condon.
