During the end of year celebrations it is important to take the necessary precautions to minimize the possibility of pets suffering behavioral disorders due to the noise of fireworks respected family members.
Both dogs and cats are afraid of the noise of fireworks, except those who are accustomed to this sound, explained dog whisperer César Millán. This happens due to their hearing ability and the possibility of detecting high frequency sounds.
“Sounds activate your nervous systems, and can trigger anxiety and fear. In this way, their survival instinct can motivate them to escape,” explained the specialist. To avoid this frustrating situation, both for animals and their owners, Millán provided 5 tips to prevent pets from suffering as a result of noise.
Preparation
It is important to plan in advance the best place so that you can experience the celebrations with less anxiety. Take him to a safe space where he cannot escape, prepare a room with water and a toy or accessory that he likes. If the cat or dog feels comfortable under a table or hiding in the bathtub, it is preferable to leave it.
Nurseries or colonies are also an option, but it is best that the animal already knows that place to avoid possible
frustrations.
Another fundamental aspect is to be very careful with the food you give on those days. Remember that physiologically they are different and therefore they are not prepared to digest some foods that can cause different alterations.
Accommodation
If your pet is going to be left alone, the ideal is to leave it in a closed place, away from noise, with fresh water and a toy to chew on. Noise can be masked with music or other sound sources, such as television. Leaving the windows closed also helps, but it is important that it has enough ventilation and is in a cool place.
If you have to transport it, always use its transport strap or cage. It is not advisable to carry it loose, even though it is usually done, a noise can generate an unexpected reaction.
Millán suggests that the best way to mitigate the possible consequences is to accustom the pet to the sound of pyrotechnics through sounds that reproduce the noise of fireworks, “it is easy from a recording gradually, it can take up to 3 weeks for him to adapt” and recommended doing it before feeding him.
A method that allows you not to associate this sound with something scary. If it is done less frequently, that is, 2 to 3 weeks before, it may be necessary to use other precautions.
Communication
If you are going to be with your dog during the fireworks, sending the calming message that there is nothing to worry about will also help him relax. Remember, however, while humans communicate with words, dogs communicate with energy, and will look to their pack leader for clues on how they should behave. If you are not making a big deal or showing excitement about the fireworks, then he will learn to be less worried too.
Sedation
If necessary, the veterinarian can prescribe a drug; appropriate food may also be useful if the pet is expected to go through this experience. Knowing the nutritional solution for dogs and cats helps the pet cope with stressful situations.
