Personally, I buy a lot of parts at once, and in order not to waste money I plan ahead or have a universal kit and having supplemented it with some parts, I found it very useful. About half of these parts will come in handy in almost any pedal, about 1/4 might come in handy if you're the kind of builder who thinks outside the box and doesn't insist on authentic articles for everything. I ended up putting together a bunch of great circuits that I probably wouldn't have tried if I didn't have tons of random PNP BJTs lying around.
