Hi

We have been staying in a villa in Mugla for the last 4 weeks, booked through a UK website which connects private owners with renters.

On the day we left the property, we were informed by a local resident that the villa does not have a permit and isn’t licensed to take renters.

We asked the owner and he acknowledged that he does not yet have a license, he said he was “working on it” and we now realise he didn’t submit any of our information to the local police, presumably because he didn’t want to get found out. He is apologetic but not offering any solution and I know he has other paying guests in the villa now.

I understand it is illegal to let a house for periods under 100 days in Turkey without a permit ? Should we tell the local authorities? Any advice would be welcome

We are still travelling around Turkey and are quite shaken by this experience.

Thanks in advance

Jon

I see it’s been a while since you’ve posted, but I just wanted to ask if anyone has had recent experiences with local authorities actually cracking down on illegal rentals? I’ve heard mixed things about inspections increasing, but not sure how true that is. Would be great to hear if anyone’s been checked lately or knows someone who has – especially in smaller towns where things might be more relaxed.

I had a similar situation once while sorting out accommodation abroad, and it made me extra careful since. What helped me was sticking to well-known options like these holiday villas for rent in marbella where the listings are clear and you’re less likely to run into sketchy setups or unregistered rentals. Also, double-checking ownership and permissions before making payments saved me from a nasty surprise.
