GRAND FORKS, N. Adam Humphries Buccaneers Jersey .D. -- Kevin Dineen learned quickly what the U.S. womens hockey team is
all about ahead of the Sochi Winter Games.
In his debut as Canadas womens team head coach, Dineen watched his club
drop a 4-1 decision Friday to the Americans in exhibition action.
"Tremendous amount of respect for that opponent, thats an exceptional
team there," said Dineen about his first taste of the U.S program.
Brianna Decker scored the eventual winner for the Americans while
sisters Monique and Jocelyne Lamoureux each had a goal and an assist.
Hilary Knight added one more to round out the offence.
Haley Irwin scored Canadas lone goal of the game as Jayna Hefford and
Caroline Ouellette picked up assists.
U.S. goaltender Molly Schaus earned the win while Shannon Szabados took
the loss for Canada.
Irwin opened the scoring for the Canadians at 17:22 of the first period.
But the lead didnt last long as Monique Lamoureaux tied it for the
Americans with less than 10 seconds to go in the first frame.
"Getting scored on in the last 10 seconds of the first gave them
momentum and we made some pretty big mental errors," said Irwin.
Things got worse for Canada in the second period as they gave up three
goals in a seven-minute span.
Decker scored for the U.S. at 8:37, Knight tacked on another at 13:24
and Jocelyne Lamoureux made it 4-1 just over two minutes later.
"There were preventable plays that led to scoring chances," said Dineen.
"The second period was an area I thought we were out played."
The Americans not only controlled the scoreboard through the first 40
minutes, but they kept the Canadian squad from any real scoring chances.
Heading into the third period Canada had registered just 11 shots on
goal.
"Ive seen that we need to look for ways to create more offence," said
Dineen. "Certaintly putting pucks on the net is a good way to start and
we didnt do that enough tonight."
The Canadians tried to battle back in the third period, but couldnt find
a way to beat Schaus.
Eventually, emotions took over and with the game out of reach. Tempers
flared in the final minute as 12 players -- six from each club -- were
handed penalties with just eight seconds remaining in the contest after a
10-player altercation unfolded in front of the American net.
In total, 10 fighting majors and a string of other infractions were
dealt. The two teams also fought in October late in a game in
Burlington, Vt., with all 10 skaters squaring off late in the third
period. They had another big scrap in 2010.
"Its no different than any other rivalry in sport," Irwin said about the
tussle. "That emotional part that came out at the end for both teams
... obviously you dont want players to have major penalties, but
emotions do run high in hockey."
Dineen took his first international coaching job after Dan Church
stepped down unexpectedly last week with less than two months before the
start of the Sochi Olympics.
Dineen served as head coach of the NHLs Florida Panthers for just over
two seasons until he was fired last month.
The Americans will host the Canadians in an exhibition game Dec. 28 in
St. Paul, Minnesota.

winning in overtime at Memphis and the Mavericks topping the Los Angeles
Lakers in Dallas.CHICAGO -- The Colorado Avalanche are climbing the
Western Conference standings because of strong goaltending and tight
defence.
And on Friday, they also outskated and handled one of the NHLs most
skilled offensive teams.
Semyon Varlamov made 27 saves to earn his second shutout, and
T.J. Galiardi had a goal and an assist to lead the Avalanche past the
Chicago Blackhawks 4-0 for their fourth straight win.
David Jones, David Van Der Gulik and Chuck Kobasew also scored for
Colorado, which has won nine of its past 10.
"I thought Varly was solid all night long, but I thought we played a
real sound game from start to finish," Avalanche coach Joe Sacco said.
"We were ready to play tonight, and when youve got a couple-goal lead in
this league, its hard to come back on.
"But that team is very dangerous and we wanted to make sure we stayed
with the game plan. We pretty much did that for the whole 60 minutes."
Varlamov made a few sharp close-in saves, but wasnt consistently tested
by the Blackhawks in his sixth career shutout.
Chicago lost its third straight to match a season high for consecutive
defeats, and has dropped four of its past five following a 9-1-1 run.
The Avalanche are playing well without forward Matt Duchene, who missed
his third game with a knee injury.
"We really tried to get the puck in their end as much as we could to
keep it away from their skilled forwards," Galiardi said. "And when we
were in there, we played well."
J.S. Giguere has been in goal most nights during the Avalanches run. But
Varlamov was solid for a second straight game on Friday.
"Our goaltending has been unbelievable, so we wanted to help him out a
little bit," Galiardi said. "Tonight was just a good night."
The Blackhawks were flat and sloppy following a 5-4 loss in Philadelphia
on Thursday, when they gave up a game-winning power-play goal with 33
seconds left in the game after erasing a two-goal deficit in the third
period.
"We were a step behind the whole game," Chicago defenceman Duncan Keith
said. "I dont know why, especially in games like this when its
back-to-back.

Chicago coach Joel Quenneville was even more blunt.
"Tonight we didnt deserve anything," Quenneville said. "We got what we
deserved.

Three recent rookie call-ups -- defenceman Dylan Olsen and forwards

Jones deflected in the only goal of the first with 7:03 left in the

Colorados Erik Johnson slid a shot from the right point through traffic
and with Jones cutting in front of the net. The puck glanced off Jones
stick and sailed into the upper right corner of the net.
Galiardi made it 2-0 at 1:47 of the second, just moments after Varlamov
poke-checked the puck away from Chicagos Patrick Sharp, who was in alone
at the Colorado net.
Blackhawks defenceman Nick Leddy couldnt control the puck deep in the
Chicago zone, and it rolled to Paul Stastny deep on the left side.
Stastny sent a pass across the crease to Galiardi, who sent it into a
wide-open net.
Van Der Gulik extended Colorados lead to 3-0 at 8:40, five seconds after
the Avalanche had killed a Chicago penalty.
Leddys weak pass along the backboards was picked off by rookie
Gabriel Landeskog, who slipped it through traffic to Van Der Gulik in
the slot.
Chicagos Viktor Stalberg backhanded a shot off the post 5:47 into the
third to cap a breakaway.
Varlamov made a point-blank glove save on Sharp about two minutes later.
Kobasew completed the scoring on a tip-in with 1:56 left.
