its 2015 campaign with a 3-2 defeat against Chile at the Estadio El Teniente.
Roberto Gutierrez also found the back of the net for Chile, while Jozy Altidore
and Brek Shea scored for the Americans, who last faced Chile in January of 2011
at the home of the Los Angeles Galaxy -- a match that ended in a 1-1 draw.

these January games represent a chance for manager Jurgen Klinsmann to take a

well as forward Bobby Wood. The substitute bench also included youngsters Shane
ONeill, Wil Trapp, Perry Kitchen and Miguel Ibarra. A new year also meant some
experimentation with a new formation as the Americans lined up in a 3-5-2 with
Birnbaum, Matt Besler and Jermaine Jones starting in the back. The new-look
formation, which places extra defense responsibility on midfield wingers DeAndre
Yedlin and Brek Shea, worked early as the U.S. took the lead after just six
minutes. Besler threaded the ball perfectly down the left flank for Shea and the
Orlando City SC man did well to stick it past Chile goalkeeper Johnny Herrera
low to the far post for the opening salvo. But the Chileans responded with an
equalizer four minutes later as Gonzalez sent a brilliant cross into the penalty
area from the left flank, allowing Gutierrez to nod it past U.S. goalkeeper Nick
Rimando. Klinsmanns squad took the lead just past the half-hour mark with some
excellent play in tight space as Yedlin got free down the right wing and slid it
into space for Mix Diskerud. Diskerud, the newly-minted New York City FC
midfielder, cut it back to Altidore, who fired it home for his 26th career
international goal. As the second half unfolded, however, the home side seized
control and looked to be just a bit quicker to the ball than the Americans.
Michael Bradley produced the best chance for the U.S. in the second half when he
let one rip from distance on the hour mark that smacked the crossbar and stayed
out of the net. With Chile continuing to gain momentum as the second half wore
on, the hosts equalized in the 66th minute as Gonzalez was played through the
U.S. defense by Marco Medel before firing past Rimando into the bottom right
corner for his fifth international strike. The deciding tally came with 15
minutes to play as Gonzalez was quick to react to a rebound on the left side of
the box and he smashed it past Rimando to give the hosts the lead. The visitors
had one final opportunity in stoppage time as Los Angeles Galaxy youngster Gyasi
Zardes let one go from the right side of the penalty area, but it was swallowed
up by Herrara and Chile escaped with the victory. The Stars and Stripes will
next be in action on February 8 against Panama.
