Bomb Explodes near Sonu Nigam's Concert Venue

KARACHI: A man was killed and at least eight others were seriously injured when a car bomb exploded in Zulfiqar Street near the Carlton Hotel, where the police had established a cordon for the security of musical concert of famous Indian singer Sonu Nigam at the Golf Club on Saturday night.

Police said a Suzuki Margalla bearing registration number AB 0657 blew up with a huge bang around 10 pm on Zulfiqar Street in Defence Phase VIII, a distance of two kilometres from the Golf Club, as a man dropped out of it and disappeared.

The explosion was so strong that the vehicle broke into pieces following a fire, eyewitnesses said.

The dead was identified as Farrukh Afandi, son of Zarreen, a resident of Dehli Colony.

He and injured Faizan and Muzaffar were travelling in a car (ABZ 020-Toyota Corolla) close by and their car was hit by the explosion along with other vehicles at the scene. They and another unidentified injured person were taken to the JPMC.

Some other injured persons, including few women, were rushed to a private hospital.

The car used in the explosion was snatched from Rashid Ali, a local trader, from in front of his house in Aziz Bhatti Shaheed police jurisdiction at about 9:30pm.

Tariq Jamil, the DIG Operations, Karachi and other senior police
officers rushed to the scene and reviewed the situation.

However, the musical concert, which began at 9:15 pm, was in full swing till the filing of this report and no panic was reported from there, as the participants were unaware of the bombing.
