Islamabad: Pakistani cricketing legend-turned-politician Imran Khan says he has divorced his socialite wife, Jemima, after nine years of marriage.
Speculation about the glamorous couple's relationship has been rife in the social circles of Islamabad and London for months, with Jemima spending more and more time away from her husband while studying in London.
"I sadly announce that Jemima and I are divorced," Khan said in a statement issued by his Justice Movement party on Tuesday.
"This was a mutual decision and is clearly very sad for both of us. My home and my future is in Pakistan.
"Whilst Jemima tried her best to settle here, my political life made it difficult for her to adapt to life in Pakistan."
Jemima, the daughter of late millionaire Sir James Goldsmith, immersed herself in Pakistani culture after marrying Khan in 1995, winning grudging respect in the conservative Muslim country of 150 million people. The couple have two sons.
