Ex....i would think is meant former wife, husband Girlfriend, boyfriend...

maybe people say it because they want that person to remain anonymous, that they don't want to mention them say to a current partner?? maybe i'm not really sure, but it's a common expression, don't knowt the origins though, but it was commonly used for something that is not in fashion anymore (like an antique) so maybe thats the sort of view they are giving of their "Ex"

but it's not only used in relationships, it could be used to quote something that took place or was formerly e.g. the ex world champion of........ and you know the rest.
