Benefits of Adrak
_ Increases immunity.
Stimulant for the digestive, respiratory and nervous systems.
_ Helps to revitalize a sluggish circulation and removes dullness and
inertia.
Relieves joint pains. It can be rubbed on joints and may be mixed with oil
before application.
_ Relieves cold-related aches if applied as paste on forehead and on the
chest.
_ Useful in bringing on delayed menstrual period and in relieving menstrual
cramps.
Sounth works well in cases of malabsorption and flatulence.
Sounth is also therapeutic for loose bowel movements and strengthens digestive power if given to infant in tiny doses.

Adrak Preparations: Enlisted below are some preparations to tackle day-to-day ailments. Take care while peeling Adrak because the essential oil to which it owes its efficacy, is present in the epidermal tissue.

For Indigestion: Take ¼ - ½ teaspoon of sounth with the first morsel of food or eat a piece of adrak with salt just before a meal. This stimulates the digestive juices, which starts flowing.

For Respiratory problems: Lick a teaspoon of adrak juice mixed with honey or make a herbal tea by simmering fresh or dry adrak in water to which black pepper and tulsi are added. Sounth is also effective in the treatment of pain and swelling anywhere in the body. It increases the quantity of urine slightly.

A Nutritious Drink: Home-made ginger-ale is a delicious and nutritious drink. Wash and cut a medium-sized piece of adrak. Simmer it with a glass of water until the water is reduced by half and is a dark yellow colour. Cool, strain out the adrak. Add sugar or honey to taste. When needed, add soda and/or water.

Precaution: Since adrak and sounth are heat producing herbs, they should be best partaken sparingly in the summer months.

Tomatoes & Cancer.

According to the National Cancer Institute, there is now enough data to show that people who consume large amounts of tomatoes and tomato products have a significantly decreased risk for prostate, lung, and stomach cancer. There is some evidence that people who consume a lot of tomatoes may also have a lower risk of pancreatic, colorectal, esophageal, oral, breast, and cervical cancers.

We do not know for sure how or why tomatoes help against cancers. The consensus seems to be that
lycopenes, bioflavonoids that are closely related to beta carotene, present in tomatoes are the natural
cancer-fighting agents responsible. Cooking releases the fat-soluble lycopenes from the fruits' cells. In
fact, cooking tomatoes rather than eating them raw has been shown to more than double the effectiveness of the lycopene tomatoes contain. A small amount of added oil, such as that in pizza or tomato sauce, intensifies the protective effect.

Numerous other potentially beneficial compounds are present in tomatoes, and, conceivably, complex
interactions among multiple components may contribute to the anticancer properties of tomatoes.

Coronary Heart Diseases

Studies have shown that consuming tomatoes and tomato products containing lycopene reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease.

The tomato help to dissolve animal fat in foods such as in butter, cheese, eggs, pork, beef, and many
deep-fried foods, thereby preventing hardening of the arteries. Tomato is also useful in reducing high blood pressure, a major risk factor for coronary heart diseases and stroke.

Lycopene, present in abundance in red tomatoes, is a potent antioxidant. Recent research has demonstrated that lycopene is at least twice as effective as b-carotene in protecting blood lymphocytes from NO2 radical damage.

Lycopene is found to reduce LDL oxidation more effectively than beta-carotene. Scientists have found
that a combination of lycopene with vitamin E prevents LDL oxidation more effectively than each substance separately.

A clinical study showed that Lithuanians who suffered a high rate of mortality from coronary heart disease has a low blood lycopene levels.

In one clinical trial, 6 healthy males were given 60 mg of lycopene daily for a three month period. Their plasma LDL cholesterol concentration reduced by 14%. Thus, in addition to protecting LDL from oxidation, tomato's lycopene also inhibits cholesterol synthesis. Tomatoes Reduces High Blood Pressure (Hypertension)

Potassium is very important for the kidneys. Potassium was found to reduce high blood pressure. One jumbo tomato (approximately 3 inches in diameter and weighing about 7 oz.) contains nearly 450 mg. of potassium.

Eye Irritation

To relieve bloodshot eyes, Chinese doctors suggest eating 1 or 2 fresh tomatoes first thing in the
morning on an empty stomach. Scientists believe that the Vitamin C and flavonoids in the tomatoes
strengthen the blood vessels.

Tomato Cleanses and Rejuvenates the skin

Tomato is excellent for cleaning and rejuvenating the skin. We will give three applications: in a face peel, as a mask and in a cleansing grain. Later we will show how it can be used to restore skin damaged by sunburn.

Face Peels

Tomato is excellent for a face peel that loosens the top layer of dead skin cells and rub them off. It is good for all types of skins. Rub tomato slices directly into your clean skin, concentrating on areas infested with blockheads. Tomatoes contain vitamin C, which has healing powers, and an acid that removes dead skin and unplugs pores, making skin soft and radiant.

Tomato Mask

Slice a ripe tomato as thin as possible. Lie down and close your eyes. Apply the slices to your face. Wait 10 to 15 minutes. Let the juices seep into your skin. After the 10 to 15 minutes are up, use a slice to rub the juices further into the skin. The tomato works as a face peel, removing all dead, dry skin and leaving your face soft, glossy, and smooth. Rub off the excess tomato, leaving the residue on your skin. The mild natural acidity of the tomato restores the ph balance of your skin.

Tomato-Almond Meal Grains

For tougher face cleaning applications a more abrasive and effective mixture may be needed. Add almond slices into a blender. Pulverize. Add an equal amount of mashed ripe tomato. Mix well. Apply over the area of the skin you want. This cleansing grain removes rough dead skin cells, and makes the skin smooth. It is also effective against blockheads. This will work against even the most stubborn areas around the nose and chin. It stimulates circulation and restores the color of sallow, tired skin.

Remove the mixture with cool water or wipe it off,
leaving a coating of the natural oils and juices.

Caution:

This is very abrasive. Use with caution.
When skin is sensitive due to too much sun, eruptions,
or abrasions, wait until the problems have gone.
Use no more than twice a week, only once if it tend to
irritate.

Healing Sunburn

Proponents say that tomatoes are useful for healing
sunburn. Tomato can be used to transform a painful
sunburn into a modest tan.

Soak peeled tomato slices in buttermilk. Apply them
directly on the skin affected. It will close up the pores and relieve the pain. Alternately, make a puree out of thinly peeled tomatoes. Add a little buttermilk (don't add too much; it will make the mixture runny.) Spread this mixture over the sunburned skin. This will give a tan over the spot where the sunburn used to be!

Restores the Health of the Liver

Tomatoes play a key role in liver health. Russian doctors prescribe tomatoes in the diets of factory workers exposed to toxic chemical. Tomatoes are useful detoxifiers because of the presence of chlorine and sulphur, two very important detoxifying trace elements. 100 grams of uncooked tomato contains 51 mg. of chlorine and 11 mg. of sulphur.

Natural chlorine helps to stimulate the liver. It assists liver in its task as an important filter for body wastes. Tomato also assists the liver in removing the toxic waste products from the system.

Sulphur helps to protect the liver from cirrhosis and
other debilitating conditions.

Drinking fresh tomato juice can help to regenerate the
damaged, destroyed or surgically removed liver.

Tomatoes help promote the health and well-being of
liver. "A tomato a day, keeps the liver in good stay!," according to John Heinerman, noted author and herbalist.

Top 10 Anti-Cancer Food
Source: Consumerline by Ching M. Alano
The Phil. Star, 10.04.2005

Cancer. The mere mention of the word makes us shrink in fear. It's like a death sentence. It's the leading cause of death in the United States, overtaking heart disease. But take heart, recent statistics show a decline in the incidence of both diseases. Now, that's heartening news! And the American Cancer Society reports that half of all these cancer deaths can be prevented by adopting a healthier lifestyle (assuming you already lead a healthy one). Now, that's doubly heartening news! Opting for a healthier (and heartier) lifestyle means you should stop smoking, lose weight, exercise, and eat more antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables, according to a recent article published in Healthy Options lifestyle newsdigest.

For starters, let's get to know more about the top 10 anti-cancer foods. Take this list (and please take them often):

1) Tomatoes. You probably know that tomatoes are oozing with lycopene, which helps ward off the free radicals associated with lung and digestive cancers as well as prostate, ovarian and lung cancers. Lycopene is also found in watermelon and pink grapefruit.

2) Broccoli sprouts. For a veggie that's so small you can hold it with one hand, this one's got a fistful of antioxidant benefits that last for days. In the same family of cruciferous vegetables are broccoli, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, and cabbage. Their sulforaphane and indole-3-carbinol protect against prostate, bladder, colon, pancreatic, gastric, breast, and other hormone-related cancers. Indeed, it's the ultimate baby vegetable, baby!

3) Berries. Blueberries, strawberries, cherries, raspberries, cranberries, and grapes are all berry-rich in anthocyanins that help repair and protect DNA.

4) Soybeans. They're soy-good for your health as they've got isoflavones (like genistein) that prevent – and treat – prostate cancer. Soybeans may also reduce breast cancer risk. Soy is truly beanificial to our health!

5) Tea. Tea – make that green and black – is steeped in powerful compounds that, according to countless studies, may lower the risk of several types of cancer. Care for tea?

6) Pumpkin. This Halloween symbol – and Cinderella's chariot – has magical powers indeed. But not too many know that this superfood is a super-rich source of beta-carotene and alpha-carotene, two carotenoids that work hard to fight lung and ovarian cancers. Also rich in carotenoids are carrots, yams, squash, melons, and sweet red peppers.

7) Spinach. Aye, aye, Popeye was right – spinach's a-okay. Its active antioxidant – lutein – may even help KO cancers of the liver, ovaries, colon, and prostate. Lutein is also found in kale and other leafy greens.

8) Garlic. The allium family, to which garlic belongs, works to boost the body's antioxidant defense systems to protect against stomach, esophageal, and breast cancers. Meet the other members of the family: scallions and onions. Truly, in onion, there is strength.

9) Pineapple. This pine cone-like fruit with its coveted sweet pulp contains an anti-inflammatory enzyme – bromelain – that may inhibit the growth of malignant lung and breast cancer cells.

10) Apple. Yes, there's a mouthful of wisdom in the saying "An apple a day keeps the doctor away." Studies show that quercetin – a flavonoid abundant in apples – prevents the growth of prostate cancer cells. The phytochemicals in the skin of an apple inhibits the reproduction of colon cancer cells. According to the National Cancer Institute, eating an apple a day may reduce the risk of lung cancer by as much as 50 percent. Excuse me while I bite into my apple.
A cupful of warning
If you're an instant noodle lover, please read this quickly before you chow down your next bowlful or cupful: Make sure you break for at least three days after eating instant noodles before you eat your next packet because the wax coating the noodles takes at least two days for the body to clear. The wax prevents the noodles from sticking together. One story has it that one steward, after eating instant noodles almost every meal, had cancer and eventually died of it. Which is why some even refer to instant noodles as "cancer noodles."

PRESSURE POINTS

How to Apply Pressure to Points When Doing Shiatsu

------------------------------------------------------------ --------------------

Shiatsu, which means "finger pressure," is Japanese acupressure that has been used for centuries to diagnose and treat illness. Shiatsu techniques stimulate the flow of ki (energy) in the meridians (energy channels) to encourage balance and health.

Steps:
1.   Think of an acupressure point as a well of energy flowing into a meridian, or an energy flow, just like a river flows into a swimming hole.

2.   Find an acupressure point by using anatomical landmarks and touch sensitivity. Points are often found in a hollow, a groove in a bone, or in a depression between muscles or muscle fibers. (Image 1)

3.   Use the pad - not the tip - of your thumb, index finger or middle finger when applying pressure to the points. (Image 2)

4.   Slide your finger along a bone or muscle until you find a hollowed area or a protrusion. Vary your pressure from very light to deep. Note that you can still feel the pressure point when your touch is very light. (Image 3)

5.   Apply pressure to the point using a light to moderate touch depending on your sensitivity. Use enough pressure to feel the tension or hardness when on a tense point. If the pain is so great that you're unable to take a deep breath, you're applying too much pressure.

6.   Allow the movement of ki (energy) to guide the depth of pressure. Let your fingers sink into the point as you apply pressure gradually. Apply and release pressure to encourage the point to open and to promote the flow of energy.

7.   Massage the point by making tiny circular movements with your finger. (Image 4)

8.   Hold the point until you feel a movement or change beneath your touch. This may be felt as a softening or warmth.

Tips:
Many people believe that "dis-ease" or symptoms of illness manifest in the mind and body when there's an imbalance in the flow of ki. Therefore we can promote wellness by using pressure to disperse congested energy and to gather energy to areas of depletion.

Be gentle but firm. It doesn't have to hurt to be effective. Bruising at the acupressure point is common when too much pressure is applied.

Pressure that's too light will be ineffective in releasing deep tension, whereas pressure that's too painful will cause a constricting response in the meridian and create muscular tension.

Warnings:
Although pressure points are normally slightly sensitive to touch, when energy flow is imbalanced, points may be very sensitive or numb and insensitive.

Too much pressure will occlude the point and inhibit the flow of energy.

Specific acupressure points may be contraindicated with certain medical conditions. If you are pregnant or under the care of a physician, consult an acupuncturist, acupressurist or your physician before using self-acupressure.

Ichthyosis
Synonyms:
Fish skin.

Definition:
Ichthyosis is a hereditary or congenital disease of the skin of hypertrophied nature, characterized by scaling off of the epidermis, dryness, roughness, and sometimes warty growths.

Etiology:
The disease, being congenital, is of course directly or indirectly inherited, often, however, passing over several generations. It has frequently been noticed to follow up one side of the family, that is, only the boys were affected, and vice versa the girls. This, we know, is peculiar to alopecian syphilis, as well as other diseases of syphilis, also of psoriasis.

Pathology:
Like most forms of skin hypertrophy there is seen a true hypertrophy of the epidermis and papillary layer of the corium.

Symptoms:
There are three clinical types or forms, xerosis, ichthyosis simplex, and ichthyosis hystrix. The xerosis, or xeroderma, is the common form, although the symptoms are less marked. It is milder and does not change much throughout life. The skin has an unwashed, dry, roughened appearance, lacking that oily appearance it usually has. Closely adherent, fine, whitish, or grayish-white scales form upon the surface of covered parts, more especially the anterior or extensor surfaces of the body. They are decidedly prominent, resembling keratosis pilaris. The disease is very mild during the warm summer months, almost disappearing, but to be renewed again in winter with all its former severity. It is generally more marked in middle life. The simplex form comes earlier in life, soon after birth. The scales are larger and the surface of the skin is marked by polyhedral inter spaces similar to a tiled floor. The color of the scales is from a dull white to a dark red color; like the former disease, it is more marked in cold climates, especially in winter. There is almost no perspiration, therefore the body presents that dry, harsh, roughened, scaly appearance similar to the scales of a fish. The hair is also dry and lustreless. If the scales are forcibly removed, or even between the scales, the form of the blood-vessels can be seen. Itching, soreness, tenderness, and many very annoying or abnormal sensations are present during the cold season of the year. Yet these patients do not complain much from cold, nor do they suffer much from heat.

Diagnosis:
The early appearance of the disease, soon after birth, the rough, dry, scaly, polygonal plates, dirty gray in color, together with that general appearance of the skin of a fish, renders the diagnosis easy.

Prognosis:
Not very favorable, years of treatment being required to cure these subjects.

Treatment:
Change of climate does much for these patients, high, dry mountain air, or a prolonged sea voyage greatly relieves them; but it is prone to return. sooner or later, until the constitutional dyscrasia is rectified. Warm bran water baths are soothing. The free use of olive oil relieves the dryness to some extent, modifies the irritation find softens the skin in a mechanical way. as there are no natural secretionsREMEDIES The remedies from which we have seen the best results in this disease are: Ars, Ars. iod., Syph., Tub., Psor., Sulph., Graph., Aur., Cal. c., Mer. sol., Nuph. lutea, Pet., Phos., Sarracen. Tell., Teucr., Sep., Hydrocotyle, Iod., Lyc., Sil. Arsenicum alb., Ars. iod., Syph., Psor., Tub., Petrol., Graph, have done more in my hands in the curing of this disease than all other remedies.
