i dont think they were weak they just couldnt put up a good fight, and another problem is that our upper order doesnt go for single and doubles as other teams do,like when yousuf and younus were playing together they could have easily made 4,5 runs in an over...quick singles not only accelerate the run rate but they also disturb the fielding side and bowler is forced to change his line and length.
i have never been able to understand what pakistani coaches do,i mean whether it was javed or woolmer or now lahson, the basic faults in the technique of all the players remain the same, partnership problem remains the same, then whats the use of hiring coaches for the team just let the boys do whatever they want to,coz this is what they do anyway

India vs Pakistan, 2nd ODI, Mohali

Younis stars in thrilling win

The Bulletin by Faras Ghani

November 8, 2007

Pakistan 322 for 6 (Younis 117, Misbah 49, Singh 2-59) beat India 321 for 9 (Tendulkar 99, Gambhir 57, Akhtar 3-42) by 4 wickets
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
How they were out

Riding on a stunning 117 by Younis Khan, Pakistan pulled off a sensational last-over victory over India in the second ODI at Mohali on Thursday. Pakistan's 322, their highest-ever total chasing, cancelled out Sachin Tendulkar's majestic 99.

Younis arrived in the middle in the sixth over of the innings with the asking rate already above six. Starting cautiously, he kept the scorecard ticking with singles and twos, sandwiched between fours through flicks off over-pitched deliveries and glances down to the fine leg. While batting with Mohammad Yousuf, Younis did get bogged down by the nagging line and length by the Indian bowlers but a 69-run partnership with Shoaib Malik and a 102-run stand with Misbah-ul-Haq always kept Pakistan in the hunt, even as the required rate touched ten-an-over.

Employing the sweep shot to great effect - in both directions - Younis swept Sourav Ganguly for six and Tendulkar for consecutive fours behind square as India paid the price for playing with four specialist bowlers. A slog sweep for his second six off Harbhajan Singh brought up Pakistan's 200 and Irfan Pathan, economical and accurate thus far, was glanced fine by Younis to bring up his first century against India.

Misbah played yet another responsible innings under the circumstances and even though his dismissal came with Pakistan on the brink of victory, his ability to nudge singles and twos with the occasional boundary had done much to get them that far. He survived a chance when Robin Uthappa dropped him off Zaheer Khan when on 25 and cashed in with two fours off the bowler, who went for 15 runs in that over.

Younis' dismissal, with the target less than 50 runs away, left Pakistan with the firepower of Shahid Afridi and Sohail Tanvir to finish things off in style. Afridi played a typically quickfire 14-ball 29 but the Indian bowlers and fielders were clear victims of nerves. Frequent full tosses and a number of dropped chances coincided with Pakistan's mounting assault and led to their defeat.

Earlier, rash strokeplay from India's batsmen allowed Pakistan to restrict the home side to a total well below the 350 that looked possible when Tendulkar and Gautam Gambhir added a rollicking 173 for the second wicket.

India, opting to bat first, suffered an early blow when Ganguly was bowled off an inside edge in the first over, bringing Gambhir to join Tendulkar at the crease. Both batsmen were content to see off the new ball which offered ample assistance to Shoaib Akhtar and Umar Gul.

As Shoaib occasionally beat him with pace and bogged him down, Tendulkar struck three consecutive fours off Gul's fifth over - a glance to fine leg, an edge past Younis at first slip, and a scorching back-foot drive through the covers. The fifty-run partnership came off only 62 balls and even a double bowling change, when Sohail Tanvir and Iftikhar Anjum replaced the opening bowlers, failed to slow the scoring-rate. What helped India on their way to over 300 were the 41 extras conceded by Pakistan in the innings.

While Tendulkar dominated and brought up the 100-partnership with a flick to midwicket, Gambhir mixed aggression with defence. Playing cautiously against deliveries outside the off stump - the only blemish being an outside edge off Anjum that Kamran Akmal failed to hold on to - he was particularly severe on Tanvir and the spinners.

Gul's second spell initiated Pakistan's fightback. He got his first wicket when Tendulkar, who fell one short of his 42nd hundred for the third time this year, was caught behind for 99. Gul followed it up with Gambhir's wicket in the following over. As India tried rebuilding after the double shock, a rejuvenated Gul - with speeds often flirting with the 150 kmph mark - bowled the first maiden of the innings.

Virender Sehwag - included in the side in place of Murali Kartik - and Yuvraj Singh staged a mini-recovery. But Afridi and Tanvir enticed both into playing false strokes. Shoaib, after a disastrous return over, grabbed three late wickets off a shortened run-up. In the end, it was left to Harbhajan Singh, who slammed an unbeaten 38 off 20 balls, to prey on an off-colour Iftikhar to take the home side past 300 which still proved not enough for the home side.

India v Pakistan, ODI series, 2007-08

Malik needs a move up

George Binoy in Gwalior

November 13, 2007

The one-day series between India and Pakistan is approaching the business end. Two matches remain but Pakistan are 2-1 down and, in Gwalior on Thursday, they play with the series at stake. There is added pressure on them given that they haven't won much of late; they were runners-up in the World Twenty20 but then lost both the home Test and ODI series to South Africa.

Their captain, Shoaib Malik, has flopped on this tour, with scores of 2, 25 and 12 so far. He has been given a vote of confidence by the Pakistan board, which extended his tenure by another year, but he will be aware of the repercussions of going into the Tests having lost the one-day series.

And yet you would bet on Malik finding his form sooner rather than later, simply because he isn't used to failing against India. Two of his five ODI hundreds and eight of his 23 half-centuries have come against them. Before the series began, Malik averaged 47.22 against India, and 55.75 in the 13 matches that Pakistan won. When India last toured Pakistan in 2005-06, Malik began the series with two nineties and a century which extended his run-scoring spree against them to six fifties out of seven innings.

That form, however, has deserted him. In Guwahati, Malik pulled a loose full toss from Sachin Tendulkar straight to deep midwicket when Pakistan needed him to raise the tempo in the final ten overs. His 25 in Mohali came off only 28 balls and Pakistan's margin of victory could have been larger had Malik not fallen at a crucial juncture of a tight run-chase. In Kanpur, he struggled to keep abreast with the asking-rate, scoring 12 off 32 balls before getting trapped leg-before by Yuvraj Singh's part-time spin. It's premature to pin the failures on the added pressures of captaincy for Malik was in reasonable form against South Africa, scoring 18, 56, 42, 45 and 23 in five innings.

Malik will desperately want to avoid a third series defeat under his tenure and one of the best ways to do it may be for him to walk out, bat in hand, during the early overs

The majority of Malik's significant innings against India, however, have come when he's batted higher up the order - at No. 3 or No. 4. In fact, he's scored a century and six fifties out of 12 innings at No. 3 and averages 86.50 after two innings at No. 4, two spots which have been occupied by Younis Khan and Mohammad Yousuf during the current series. Both players had one good innings - Younis scored the match-winning hundred at Mohali, and Yousuf made 82 in Guwahati - but this has meant that Malik has had fewer overs to bat and under high-pressure circumstances.

When Pakistan last toured India in 2004-05, they recovered from a 0-2 deficit to win the series 4-2. Malik scored 75, 65, 41 and 72 in the last four ODIs, batting at No. 3 and 4, while Yousuf and Younis came lower down the order. In this series, Pakistan's tinkering with the batting order has been restricted to changing the opening combination and giving Shahid Afridi the odd promotion.

If they were to bat Malik higher up, his presence could infuse energy into the innings during the middle overs. His agility between the wickets could create more ones and twos; he's nimble on his feet against spin; and once he's set, Malik can raise the tempo with either deft touches or the use of the long handle, something Yousuf and Younis struggled to do in Guwahati. It's a move worth making for, if Malik bats long, the chances are he'll score at up to or more than a run a ball and, should he fail, Pakistan have the experience of Younis and Yousuf, and the hitting powers of Misbah-ul-Haq and Shahid Afridi to fall back on.

There are no second chances left for Pakistan in this one-day series. Malik will desperately want to avoid a third series defeat under his tenure and one of the best ways to do it may be for him to walk out, bat in hand, during the early overs.
