Swades Hit or flop in overseas ?

Its official Swades is a flop. I knew that SRK is no match of Amir. Now stop saying that Swades is the best movie of the year and Tran gave wrong review.
Swades is Flop

'Swades' - The Verdict!

Weekend: December 17 - 19, 2004.

The verdict is out: SWADES has not found acceptance in Overseas. And the facts and figures prove it!

Shah Rukh Khan is the undisputed Emperor of Overseas. And a majority of SRK starrers have done phenomenal business in this territory. His last release, VEER-ZAARA, has emerged a blockbuster in both U.K. and U.S. markets, cementing his position further.

However, SRK's latest release, SWADES, has fared way below expectations. In fact, the below-the-mark performance of SWADES does come as a surprise since it has Ashutosh Gowariker in the driver's seat. His previous film [LAGAAN] was nominated for the Academy Awards and everyone was expecting SWADES to take a historic start in Overseas.

But…

SWADES has debuted at No. 10 position. In its opening weekend, the film has collected £ 96,842 [approx. Rs. 82.54 lacs] on 34 screens, with the per screen average working out to £ 2,848. The screen average [read chart below] is the lowest for an SRK starrer

Swades falters overseas

Ashutosh Gowariker's Swades failed to wow audiences in North America, grossing a mediocre $425,000 in three days despite showing on 74 screens.

Though it was number 18 on the box-office chart topped by the $30 million grossing Lemony Snicket's A Series Of Unfortunate Events, the new Shah Rukh Khan starrer did not do inspiring business. Its weekend gross was about 60 percent that of Veer-Zaara which is still showing on 20 screens. The mega hit directed by Yash Chopra, which also starred Shah Rukh, had opened on 83 screens in North America six weeks ago.

But the New York distributor for Swades is convinced the film has strong legs.

"We have a very touching and important film and we hope to see it play well through the holiday weeks," said Sridhar Srikula of UTV distributors.

But many fans -- even those who admired Shah Rukh's acting, AR Rahman's music, the way the songs were pictured and the film's message -- felt it was too long-winded and didactic.

Many felt the story of a NASA scientist who wrestles with the idea of going back to India and finally decides to do so was heartfelt. But they faulted its execution.

Nearly 20 minutes of the movie, including the haunting song Neendiyan, has been chopped off. Even then, the audiences got restive -- especially in the scene in which Shah Rukh engages the village elders in a dialogue about caste conflicts.

"Cut down the dialogue and bring back the song," said one elderly person at a New Jersey theatre. "Too much talk is no good."

Several people found the NASA scenes unfocussed. "What exactly was Shah Rukh doing there? I found all the scientific stuff boring," said a teenager, adding that the film hardly showed what kind of life Shah Rukh led in America.

Several exhibitors feel that the movie would have opened to far disappointing numbers if Shah Rukh was not in the lead.

Some viewers felt Gayatri Joshi was not really an asset to the film since she could not whip up enough emotions. Several others in New York thought they had seen her somewhere in the city but could not figure out where.

They would have known the next day had they watched the V Desi TV show, which dug up pictures of Gayatri inviting viewers to watch her program. Just about three years ago, she had hosted part of the show.

If Swades does not improve its business in the next two weeks and follows the usual attrition rate for Hindi movies in North America, it may end up with a disappointing but far from disastrous $1 million.

Though the box-office numbers from the United Kingdom are still awaited, they usually mirror those in America. In a few cases -- as with Veer-Zaara -- they can be about 15 percent higher.

Meanwhile, Veer-Zaara slipped from the 29th position to 49th in its sixth week in North America, where it has grossed about $2.82. It is unlikely, given its $34,000 weekend gross, that it will reach the $3 million benchmark.

In Britain, the film slipped out of the top 10 after five weeks. It grossed about $3.7 million there. The projected $6.8 million combined gross for the film on both sides of the Atlantic is astounding. And yet Kabhi Kushi Kabhie Gham, with its $7 million gross, is likely to retain the crown.

Now wat is ur excuse

damn kid u trust those net critics too much...they aint real cuz real critics don't write "Dear Ashutosh" after bashin the shyt of a movie...
if it makes u feel ne better then Tran is the best n his review is the most honest review in the whole wide world can we cut the bullshyt n wait for the awards now...

Posted on 12/22/2004 5:24:53 AM

oh I am ready to cut the bullshyt after i will prove u wrong.Bro what u really need to know is that its not only tran who thinks this movie sucks and its on every fking wesite. Everybody said that the movie sucks and it has been proven now by the look at overseas box office. Maybe u just don wanna believe it.
By the if u think all critics lie and we should not believe there reviews and box office reports then how exactly we will find out that a movie is a hit or a flop.

Posted on 12/22/2004 5:31:12 AM

well its a flopp no doubt abt that but is mein srk ka ki fault nahi hai and its not that ke amir ki lagan hit hoi and srk ki swades flopp srk was the gr8 actor and he still is although amir has his own class but srk is best thats for sure.

Posted on 12/22/2004 3:22:53 PM

actually, it made average amount of money. more then a regular flop, but less then a super hit.

im sorta disappointed about that.

Posted on 12/23/2004 12:54:32 AM

first of all i'm not denyin ne box office reports, but i aint believin on those f ing net critics either, cuz u aint sittin on the box office how would u know that if its a lie or not...since i was there in theatres to watch this movie, n guess what i had to watch an other show jus cuz the last one was sold out...so believe it or not, its a hit in overseas...n put my words down this movie is gettin awards for sure...jus wait n watch...till then u wait for n other sanju movie...

Posted on 12/23/2004 8:02:37 AM

yo why u comparing sanju and shahrukh. They have their own calss. We are jsut saying that Swades is a flop and its proven but u don wanna believe it. The reviews and box office reports are all lies and they don't do their jobs right and we should not believe them is that wat u r saying. then why did u agree with them and said that Musafir is an average why did u agree with that ???? u just wanna say that srk can't give a flop cuz he is ur favorite actor. is that right ? i guess so

Posted on 12/24/2004 2:11:16 AM

did i say that Musafir is an average cuz its said on INDIAFM lmao, kid its an average movie cuz they don't release average movies worldwide...n Musafir wasn't a worldwide release...
