Love and Laughter

I ROWED a lassie i' my plaid,
A cosy bield in weety weather,
An' aye she kissed me back an' said
"It's fine to love an' lauch thegether."

O kind, sae kind, was she yestreen,
But lassies' hearts are ill to tether,
An' here I herd the yowes my leen,
Flung weary on the drookit heather.

Happy an' happit, Heaven above
Ket her be that, I'll thole the weather;
Gie her the laughter, me the love,
Gin ne'er again the twa thegether

Furth Again

YE'RE hardly hame till furth again'
It's buckle the brogues an' fare
To the wearimost ends o' the earth again,
An' the wark that is waitin' there.
Ye are keen to gang, but it's lane an' lang
Lies ever the ootwith track,
An' its guid to mind there are frien's behind
Aye wishin ye well,--an back.

Horace in Scots
CAR.I,38
Persicos odi

FOREIGN fashions, lad, allure you,
Hamespun happit I would be;
Bring nae mair, for I assure you
Ferlies only scunner me.

Fancy tartens, clanless, gaudy,
Mention them nae mair, I say;
Best it suits your service, laddie,
An' my drinkin', hodden-grey.

Burning Leaves, November

THESE are the folios of April,
All the library of spring,
Missals gilt and rubricated
With the frost's illumining.

Ruthless, we destroy these treasures,
Set the torch with hand profane--
Gone, like Alexandrian vellums,
Like the books of burnt Louvain!

Yet these classics are immortal:
O collectors, have no fear,
For the publisher will issue
New editions every year.

Two O'Clock

Night after night goes by: and clocks still chime
And stars are changing pattrns in the dark
And watches tick, and over-puissant Time
Benumbs the eager brain. The dogs that bark,
The trains that roar and rattle in the night,
The very cats that prowl, all quiet find
And leave the darkness empty, silent quite:
Sleep comes to chloroform the fretting mind.

So all things end: and what is left at last?
Some scribbled sonnets tossed upon the floor,
A memory of easy days gone past,
A run-down watch, a pipe, some clothes we wore--
And in the darkened room I lean to know
How her dreamless breath doth pause and flow.

The Commercial Traveler

AH very sweet! If news should come to you
Some afternoon while waiting for our eve,
That the great Manager had made me leave
To travel on some territory new;
And that, whatever homeward winds there blew,
I could not touch your hand again, nor heave
The logs upon our hearth and bid you weave
Some wistful tale before the flames that grew. . .

Then, when the sudden tears had ceased to blind
Your pansied eyes, I wonder if you could
Remember rightly, and forget aright?
Remember just your lad, uncouthly good,
Forgetting what he failed in spleen or spite?
Could you remember him as always kind?

Caught in the Undertow

COLIN, worshipping some frail,
By self-deception sways her:
Calls himself unworthy male,
Hardly even fit to praise her.

But this tactic insincere
In the upshot greatly grieves him
When he finds the lovely dear
Quite implicitly believes him.

'Tis The Last Rose of Summer

'TIS the last rose of Summer,
Left blooming alone;
All her lovely companions
Are faded and gone;
No flower of her kindred,
No rosebud is nigh,
To reflect back her blushes,
Or give sigh for sigh!

I'll not leave thee, thou lone one,
To pine on the stem;
Since the lovely are sleeping,
Go sleep thou with them.
Thus kindly I scatter
Thy leaves o'er the bed
Where thy mates of the garden
Lie scentless and dead.

So soon may I follow,
When friendships decay,
And from Love's shining circle
The gems drop away!
When true hearts lie withered,
And fond ones are flown,
Oh! who would inhabit
This bleak world alone?

The Minstrel Boy

THE minstrel boy to the war is gone,
In the ranks of death you'll find him,
His father's sword he has girded on,
And his wild harp slung behind him.
"Land of song!" said the warrior bard,
"Though all the world betrays thee,
One sword, at least, thy rights shall guard,
One faithful harp shall praise thee!"

The minstrel fell!--but the foeman's chain
Could not bring his proud soul under;
The harp he loved ne'er spoke again,
For he tore its cords asunder,
And said, "No chain shall sully thee,
Thou soul of love and bravery!
Thy songs were made for the pure and free,
They shall never sound in slavery!"

The Harp That Once Through Tara's Halls

THE harp that once through Tara's halls
The soul of music shed,
Now hangs as mute on Tara's walls
As if that soul were fled.
So sleeps the pride of former days,
So glory's thrill is o'er
And hearts that once beat high for praise
Now feel that pulse no more!

No more to chiefs and ladies bright
The harp of Tara swells;
The chord alone that breaks at night
Its tale of ruin tells.
Thus Freedom now so seldom wakes,
The only throb she gives
Is when some heart indignant breaks,
To show that still she lives.

Oft in the Stilly Night

OFT in the stilly night,
Ere slumber's chain has bound me,
Fond Mem'ry brings the light
Of other days around me.
        The smiles, the tears,
        Of boyhood's years,
The words of love then spoken,
        The eyes that shone,
        Now dimm'd and gone,
The cheerful hearts now broken!
Thus in the stilly night,
Ere slumber's chain has bound me,
Sad Mem'ry brings the light
Of other days around me.

When I remember all
The friends so linked together,
I've seen around me fall,
Like leaves in wintry weather;
        I feel like one
        Who treads alone
Some banquet-hall, deserted,
        Whose lights are fled,
        Whose garlands dead,
And all, but he, departed!
Thus in the stilly night,
Ere slumber's chain has bound me,
Sad Mem'ry brings the light
Of other days around me.

Tere Shehar K Log

Mujhe Dewaana samjhte hain tere shehar k log
kiun mery daman se ulajhte tere shehar k log

main aagaya waqt hon wapis nahi aane wala
kiun mera rasta takte hain tere shehar k log

jab bhi aata hay tera naam mery naam k sath
najane kiun kiun jalte hain tere shehar k log

aur kiun don main tujhe apni wafaon ka saboot
ab mery hall par haste hain tere shehar k log

Mere dil mein basi hararat ho tum,
Meri aankhon ko mili shararat ho tum,

Dekhun tumhein to paalun mein duniya,
Na milo to milne ki baghavat ho tum,

Tumhari khamoshi keh jaati hai kai baatein,
Jise yaad karta hai dil kai raatein,

Tumhare nanhe nanhe se haath aur badi badi baatein,
Yaad reh jaati hein tumse hui sab mulakatein,

Ummeed ho hamari aanewala kal ho tum,
Hamare dilon mein basi mohabbat ho tum

Baat Niklegi To Phir Door Talak Jayegi ,

Log Be-vajah Udaasi Ka Sabab Poochengay ,
Yeh Bhi Poochengay Ke Tum Itni Pareshaan Kyon Ho,

Ungaliyan Uthegi Sookhay Huey Baalon Ki Taraf ,
Ek Nazar Dekhengay Guzray Huey Saaloun Ki Taraf ,

Chooriyon Par Bhi Kaye Tanz Kiyey Jaayengey ,
Kaanptay Haathon Pe Bhi Fikray Kasay Jaayengey ,

Log Zalim Hein , Har Ek Baat Ka Taana Dengey ,
Baton Baton Mein Mera Zikr Bhi Ley Aayengey,

Unki Baatoun Ka Zara Sa Bhi Asar Mat Lena ,
Varna Chehrey Kay Taasur Se Samajh Jaayengay ,

Chahey Kuch Bhi Ho Sawalaat Na Karna Unsey,
Meray Baarey Mein Koye Baat Na Karna Unsey,

Baat Niklegi To Phir Door Talak Jayegi....

khusbo'on ki tarha meri har saans main
piyar apna basanay ka wada karo
ranng jitnay tumhari mohabbat kay hain
meray dil main sajanay ka wada karo

hai tumhari wafaon pay mujko yakeen
phir bhi dil chahta hai meray dil nasheen
yoonhi meri tasali ki khatir zara
mujko apna bananay ka wada karo

jab mohabbat ka iqrar kartay ho tum
dhadkanoon main naya rang bhartay ho tum
baarha kar chukay ho, magar aj phir
mujhko apna bananay ka wada karo

sirf lafzoon say iqrar hota nahi
ik janib say hi piyar hota nahi
main tumhain yaad rakhnay ki khaon qasam
tum mujko na bhulanay ka wada karo

(Har Qadam Tere Saath Rahon)

Terey her qadam key mey sath cahloun
Her din her raat her lamha terey sath rahoun
Too meri her sans mey khusboo bana rahey
Zindagi jo yuen guzer rahi hey her pal derta houn
Tujh sey biccherney key tassawer sey kanp uthta houn
Khawish hey haal mazi bun jaiy mera
Phir mey terey sath nai zindagi shuroo karoun
Tujh sey milney key baad yeh dua hey meri
Us jehan mey bhi mey terey sath rahoun...

Shayad Zindagi hi na rahay tairay janay k baad....

Tujhay sochon to kis tarah sochon,
Tujhay tasawwor mein laon to kis tarah,
Tujhay chahon to kis tarah chahon,
Tujhay samnay laon to kis tarah,
Kuch to rehem kar mere dil per,
Yeh rota hai teri yaad mein kis tarah,
Chahon tujh say hamesha baatein karna,
Per haal-e-dil kahon to kis tarah,
Kuch to sochna hoga mere baaray mein,
Kia socha ! yeh janoo to mein kis tarah,
Na dikha soorat apni awaz say karday aashna,
Magar Izhar ! yeh hoga to kis tarah...

karna hi hai to machcharo ko miss karo

Jo jan hatheli par rakh k

larkiyo ko kiss karte hain.

Bhul se kabhi hame bhi yaad kiya karo,
Bhul se kabhi hame bhi yaad kiya karo,
Pyar nahi to shikayat kiya karo,
itna bhi gair na samjho ki baat hi na kiya karo,
phone nahi to sms hi kiya karo!

Dard kaisa bhi ho aankh nam na karo,
Raat kaali sahi koi gam na karo,
Ik sitara bano jagmagatey raho,
Zindagi mein sada muskurate raho.

Baantni hai agar bant lo har khushi,
Gam na zahir karo tum kisi par kabhi,
Dil ki gehrai mein gam chhupate raho,
Zindagi mein sada muskurate raho.

Ashk anmol hain kho na dena kahin,
In ki har boond hai motiyon se haseen,
Inko har aankh se tum churate raho,
Zindagi mein sada muskurate raho.

Faasley kam karo dil milate raho
Zindagi mein sada muskurate raho

Neend bhari hai aankhon main aur intezaar kerta hon
Dekh meri nazron main tujhe kitna pyaar kerta hon...

Tum na raho paas mere to koi shikayat nahi
Main dost hijr ka sahi, wasl pe aitebaar kerta hon...

Main ro parrun teri yaad main jab chaudhween ki raat ho
Main ek baar jiya tha jab, ab baar baar marta hon...

Hassas kitna hon main kisi ko kuch khaber nahi
Main zindagi k khail main adhoora kirdaar kerta hon...

Tum door se bulaao gay main buhat paas aaun ga
Tum hud per kharre rehna main hud paar kerta hon...

Zindagi tere aane se aur tu na lot k aaye gi
Main phir bhi tere aane per inhesaar kerta hon...

The Monument
Our elm began to die that spring, slowly.

Wanting stability in threat of change
we ourselves searched all summer
for a superlative glue,
found it in our store of hardest ware,
bought it dearly.

That fall our elm did die, slowly.

But we on variangled ladders
refastened the fallen leaves with
peerlessly permanent glue,
then stood back and looked.

Still it stands:
crisp, dead;
cutting the winter wind.

A Capital Trip
We went for salmon,
me and him,
out past the last singing buoy,
on a choppy sea,
his wife aboard, too,
of course; as crew,
helpmeet, her feet
in high sturdy boots,
thick wool over all the rest.
I had on my flowery dress,
and like to froze
till he gave me his coat,
his big cozy jacket
right off his back,
when the wind whipped up
to a real squall
and rain fell hard
on the slippery deck,
rinsing my dainty hands.
We went for salmon,
came home with none,
no fish in the hold,
no wife in woolens,
a successful trip, nevertheless,
all told.

What I want of you
I want an infusion of your knowledge
I want to converse with you from moon to moon
I want to know what your desires are
I want to understand your listening
I want to eat your calmness
I want to hum in the key of your music
I want to feel the texture of your skin

I want to know how things are joined together for you and how set apart
I want to taste the inside of your shell
I want to see how Fibonacci works for you

I want to hold with tenderness your secret tragedies
I want to make you realise what you didn’t know you knew
I want to move you to tears
I want you to be glad of the tears I move you to
I want you to give me the courage to be unreasonable
